There is, there are

To talk about the existence of something, we use the verb form « there is ».

There is / There are is a common phrase in english. used to indicate that something or some one exists or is in a certain location.

Some examples :

• Things you can see – They are flowers in my garden.
• Thinks you know exist – There is a church in my town.

En français

Contrairement à la langue française, l’anglais fait la distinction entre une description plurielle (plusieurs éléments) et singulière (un seul élément). En français, l’expression « il y a  » ne change pas, que l’on « Il y a UN chat » ou « Il y a 122 chats ». Ainsi, nous disons « il y a UN problème » mais en français nous utilisons la même expression pour dire « il y a PLUSIEURS problèmes ». L’anglais quant à lui fait la distinction entre des concepts pluriels et singuliers. Toutes les descriptions au singulier donnant l’idée de « il y a » sera dit « There is… »

Voici quelques exemples d’utilisant de « there is… »:

• There is a problem = Il y a un problème
• There is a beautifull house = Il y a une belle maison
• There is a police car = Il y a une voiture de police
• There is a fat man = Il y a un homme gros
• There is hope = Il y a de l’espoir
• There is a lot of money = Il y a beaucoup d’argent
• There is much work to do = Il y a beaucoup de travail à faire
• There is a very interesting film there = Il y a un film très interessant là-bas.
• There is a fire going on next street = Il y a un feu qui est en cours sur l’autre rue
• There is a good restaurant nearby = Il y a bon restaurant près d’ici
• There is dictionnary on the table = Il y a un dictionnaire sur la table
• There is a translator for your work = Il y a un traducteur pour ton travail
• There is a great show tonight = Il y a un super spectacle ce soir
• There is foreigner in town = Il y a un étranger dans la ville
• There is a new country in Asia = Il y a un nouveau pays en Asie
• There is a huge amount of iron in this building = Il y a une grande quantité de fer dans cet édifice
• There is a new technology coming soon = Il y a une nouvelle technologie qui arrive bientôt

Notez que l’expression « there is » est utilisée en anglais avec tout ce qui est singulier et/ou ne se compte pas (travail, argent, vent, neige, pluie,etc).

Négation de l’expression « there is »:

On dit « there is no… » lorsqu’un nom suit directement et lorsque la traduction implique l’idée de « aucun ». Exemple d’utilisation de « there is no »:

• There is no problem = Il n’y pas (aucun) de problèmes »
• There is no newspaper in russian = Il n’y a pas (aucun) de journal russe »
• There is no homework for tomorrow = Il n’y a pas (aucun) devoir pour demain
• There is no exam next week = Il n’y a pas (aucun) d’examens la semaine prochaine.
• There is no book about this subject = Il n’y a pas de livre sur ce sujet
• There is no restaurant open at this hour = Il n’y a pas de restaurant ouvert à cet heure
• There is no computer as you asked = Il n’y a pas d’ordinateurs comme vous avez demandé
• There is no way to find a solution = Il n’y a pas de façons de trouver une solution
• There is no suspect yet = Il n’y a pas de suspect jusqu’à maintenant
• There is no computer in this room = Il n’y a pas d’ordinateur dans cette salle
• There is no golf club in this town = Il n’y a pas de club de golf dans cette ville

Par contre, on utilise la négation « There is not… » lorsque l’idée de « aucun » n’est pas présente. La négation avec « …not » est utilisé pour le pluriel « there are… »

• There is not even a cat = Il n’y a pas même pas de chat
• There is not enough space here = Il n’y a pas assez d’espace

• There are many problems = Il y a beaucoup de problèmes
• There are beautifull houses = Il y a de belles maisons
• There are police cars = Il y a des voitures de police
• There are fat men = Il y a des gros hommes
• There are ideas = Il y a des idées
• There are interesting films there = Il y a des films intéressants là-bas.
• There are fireworks = Il y a des feux d’artifices.
• There are many good restaurants nearby = Il y a beaucoup de bons restaurants près d’ici
• There are books on the table = Il y a des livres sur la table
• There are many translators for your work = Il y a beaucoup de traducteurs pour ton travail
• There are great shows tonight = Il y a des supers spectacles ce soir
• There are foreigners in town = Il y a des étrangers dans la ville
• There are four new countries in Asia = Il y a 4 nouveaux pays en Asie
• There are many bills = Il y a beaucoup de billets
• There are new technologies coming soon = Il y a des nouvelles technologies qui arrivent bientôt
